Christoph Strasser crossed the United States in 7 days, 15 hours and 56 minutes at the 2014 Race Across America, claiming his third solo title and setting a course record that still stands as the fastest bicycle crossing of the country.
A lead measured in days, not minutes
The Austrian ultra-cyclist rode the 3,020‑mile route from Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland, at an average speed of 16.42 miles per hour. When he reached the finish dock, runner‑up Mark Pattinson was still more than 750 kilometres behind him on the road.
Strasser built that margin from the first kilometres. No rider in the race’s 32‑year history had ever been as fast through the early stages while also finishing as the fastest overall.
Kansas crosswinds and six hours of sleep
Team doctor Rainer Hochgatterer later singled out the halfway point in Kansas, where extreme crosswinds battered the riders. “Especially in Kansas at the halfway point of the race, we had extremely strong crosswinds and difficult conditions,” he said.
Strasser slept only 6 hours and 30 minutes across the entire effort. His eleven‑person crew managed glute, knee and arm trouble without a single logistical error, and he held his focus as the chasers disappeared from sight.
Eight days, erased twice
A year earlier, Strasser had become the first solo rider to finish RAAM in under eight days, stopping the clock at 7 days 22 hours 11 minutes. In 2014 he beat that mark by 6 hours and 56 minutes on a course that was 26.7 miles longer.
“I’m absolutely speechless,” he told reporters at the finish. “It’s incredible for me that it turned out to be such a great time – for the second time I’ve broken the magical 8‑day mark.”
A record that outlasted his own dynasty
The 2014 time remains the Guinness‑ratified fastest crossing of America by bicycle. Strasser would go on to win RAAM three more times, taking his career tally to six solo victories — more than any other rider in the event’s history.
The Kansas wind, the six‑and‑a‑half hours of sleep and the 184 hours turning the pedals left behind a figure no one has touched since.
