Your data on this site
Privacy
In short
This site is free to read and sets no tracking cookies of its own. Personal data is processed only where you choose it: when you sign up for the newsletter, or when you load an embedded video from a third-party platform.
Newsletter
When you enter your email address in a newsletter form, we pass it to beehiiv, the service that sends the newsletter on our behalf. beehiiv first sends you a confirmation email (double opt-in); your subscription only becomes active once you click that link. Your address is used solely to send you the newsletter, and every issue contains an unsubscribe link. Along with the address we record that the signup came from this site (for our own attribution, no profiling). See beehiiv's privacy policy for how they process data. You can also subscribe or unsubscribe directly on our newsletter page.
Embedded videos
Stories may embed videos from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. Nothing is loaded from those platforms until you click to load the embed (or accept the site-wide notice). Loading one transfers data such as your IP address to that platform under its own privacy policy, which is linked on each embed. YouTube is embedded via its privacy-enhanced domain.
Analytics and hosting
We measure page views with Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not identify individual visitors. The site is hosted on Vercel; server logs (IP address, requested page, time) are kept briefly for security and operation. Quiz progress and streaks are stored only in your own browser.
Story contributions
If you send us a story via the contribute page, we store the text, your name and your email address so the desk can review it and reach you. Your IP address is kept only as a one-way hash to limit automated submissions, never in the clear. Contributions we don't run are deleted after 90 days; for published ones, your email is deleted after 180 days and your name stays as the story's credit. You can ask for a contribution to be removed at any time.
Contact and rights
You can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, or withdraw a consent at any time. Reach the desk via the contact route named in our editorial policy.
