Onofriichuk Wins First Hoop World Title in Frankfurt

Taisiia Onofriichuk won her first individual world title with a hoop routine set to "Thriller" at the Festhalle in Frankfurt, scoring 30.700 points on the final day of the 2026 World Championships.

An edge of two tenths

The 18-year-old Ukrainian delivered the performance with precision and theatrical flair. She edged out Italy's defending champion Sofia Raffaeli by a slender 0.200 points. The packed arena fell silent during her routine, then erupted as the score confirmed a new world champion.

Silver first, then gold

The hoop final was a tense affair on a day dominated by home favourite Darja Varfolomeev, who collected her 14th world title across other apparatus. Onofriichuk had already claimed a clubs silver medal earlier in the day. She won a tiebreak via a higher execution score after both she and Mariia Borisova posted identical 30.050 totals.

The Frankfurt gold adds a world crown to a rapidly growing collection. Onofriichuk became the 2025 European all-around champion in Budapest, Ukraine's first continental title since 1997. A product of the storied Deriugins School under Irina Deriugina, she also finished ninth in the individual all-around at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

"For me, becoming a world champion means taking pride in our country," she told reporters afterwards. "I'm just so happy that I managed to do it."

The hoop title marks a quiet arrival at the top of the sport for an athlete long seen as Ukraine's heir apparent. On this August evening in Frankfurt, the promise became a gold medal.
