Hermann Maier ended his 13-season World Cup career on 13 October 2009, retiring with 54 victories and four overall titles — a tally that ranked third among men at the time.
A line drawn in Vienna
At a Vienna press conference, Maier fought back tears as he read a short statement. “I have decided that I will draw a line and end my career as a ski racer as of today,” he told reporters, then broke down once the words were out.
The announcement followed a difficult spring. Minor arthroscopic knee surgery had forced a long rest, and the 36-year-old chose his future health over another campaign.
The win that became the last
His 54th World Cup trophy had arrived less than a year earlier, in the super-G at Lake Louise on 30 November 2008. It was his fourth victory on that slope, his 24th in the discipline, and his first win in nearly three years — a week before his 36th birthday.
Nobody knew it then, but that crisp late-autumn run would be his finish. A few months later the knee gave way, and the long fight to return simply ran out of road.
A career built on speed and survival
Maier debuted late, at 23, and soon became the circuit's dominant force. In the 1999–2000 season he amassed 2,000 points, a men’s record that stood until 2023, sweeping the overall, downhill, super-G and giant slalom crystal globes.
His record book includes two Olympic golds from Nagano 1998 — the super-G won three days after a horrific downhill crash — and a famous comeback at Kitzbühel in 2003, less than 18 months after a motorcycle accident nearly cost him his right leg.
Health first, for the future
“My big goal was to get back in shape physically and I have achieved exactly that,” he said. “With regard to my future life, my health was paramount for me and that’s why I’m calling it quits now.”
The Herminator left the circuit while he could still walk away whole, having already twice shown the world what coming back looks like.
