On 10 August 2018, Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran away from the field to win the European 1500m title in Berlin. He was 17, the youngest man ever to take the crown. The man he dethroned was his own brother, Filip, the reigning champion.
A teenager outkicks his own family
Ingebrigtsen led three brothers through the bell, then simply kept going. Down the home straight of the Olympiastadion he lengthened his stride and pulled clear, stopping the clock in 3:38.10 off a closing lap of 53.64 seconds. Behind him the race turned frantic, with Marcin Lewandowski passing Jake Wightman in the last two metres for silver.
His brothers found no such reward. Henrik, the 2012 champion, faded to fourth, boxed in when he needed room. Filip, the 2016 winner, drifted back to twelfth.
Youngest champion of a golden weekend
The win made Ingebrigtsen the youngest European track champion in the meeting's history. It was also the first act of a rare double. Twenty-four hours later he added the 5000m in 13:17.06, the first man to win both titles at a single European Championships.
Seen from now, Berlin reads like a first chapter. The teenager who took gold from his brothers would go on to Olympic titles in Tokyo and Paris and a string of world records over 2000m, 3000m and the mile.
The moment barely registered on his face. Unsure he had won, he waited to see the result confirmed on the big screen. "I can't believe it," he said, before finding a Norwegian flag and setting off on his lap.
His rivals understood what they had watched. Wightman, taking bronze, described him plainly to reporters as the predator. For a family that had built its name on the 1500m, the youngest son had quietly claimed it as his own.
