Audrey Werro won her first senior title on Friday night, taking the 800 metres gold at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The Swiss runner clocked a championship-record 1:54.81 to beat double-defending champion Keely Hodgkinson before a full-capacity home crowd.
From fall to gold in 24 hours
A day earlier, Werro had hit the track after tripping in her semi-final, crossing the line 16th. The track referee reinstated her on appeal, and she turned the reprieve into a bold front-running plan. She came through the opening lap in 56.45 seconds and never let go of the lead, holding off Hodgkinson’s late charge on the final straight.
A season-long rivalry settles on the podium
Hodgkinson took silver in 1:55.01, with Femke Broeders-Bol third in a Dutch record 1:55.54. It was the fourth duel between Werro and Hodgkinson this year — the Swiss athlete had already beaten the Olympic champion at the Stockholm Diamond League in June and later ran 1:53.80 in Paris, the fastest women’s 800 metres in 43 years.
“I knew I was the strongest if I went in front from the start, so I decided that was my best card and played it,” Werro told reporters afterwards. “I decided to give it my all, and today was my day.”
At 22, Werro has moved from age-group golds and a European Under-23 title to the top of the senior podium in a single season. Her Paris time leaves only two women ahead of her on the all-time list, and her rivalry with Hodgkinson has reshaped the event.
The Alexander Stadium evening gave Birmingham no home champion. It did give the sport a new European queen — one who arrived via a fall, ran from the front, and refused to let the script belong to anyone else.
