Battocletti Retains European 5000m Title for Sixth Gold

Nadia Battocletti retained her European 5000m title in Birmingham, winning a tactical final in 15:37.84 to claim the sixth European gold medal of her career.

The race unfolded as a slow, cagey affair on Tuesday evening. Runners jostled in lanes four and five before Maureen Koster of the Netherlands strung the field out, but her front-running faded as the bell approached.

A single surge decides the title

Down the back straight of the final lap, Koster still led from Britain's Hannah Nuttall. Just before the 200-metre mark, Battocletti sped past and made her decisive move, opening an immediate gap.

The Italian covered the final lap in 59.2 seconds and the last 200 metres in 28.2. Marta García of Spain took silver in 15:39.98, while Micol Majori completed a surprise Italian double with bronze in 15:40.65.

A sixth gold, a quiet reply

This was her second consecutive European 5000m crown after Rome 2024, where she also won the 10,000m title. Her continental gold collection now stretches across track, cross country and road racing.

The 26-year-old arrived in Birmingham with questions about her form. After winning world indoor 3000m gold in February, she had finished an underpar 13th at the Diamond League in Rome and later withdrew from Monaco due to fatigue caused by anaemia.

The retained title quietened those doubts. For an athlete who holds Italian records at both 5000m and 10,000m, Birmingham marked the first firm step toward another distance double.
