Yao Qianxun raised her pistol on the opening day of the ISSF World Cup in Hangzhou and, by the time she lowered it, the record book had been rewritten twice. Alongside Hu Kai, she posted 488.4 points in the 10m air pistol mixed team final. China's reigning world champions Yao Qianxun and Hu Kai set world records in both qualification and the final to win the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event.

The margin over history was slim, but the manner was decisive. Having set a new qualification mark of 591 points earlier on Wednesday, the duo scored 488.4 points in the final, surpassing the previous world record of 487.7 set by India's Palak Palak and Mukesh Nelavalli in April. A qualification record in the morning, a final record by evening. Two marks, one day, on home ranges in Hangzhou.

How it was decided

The final rewarded consistency over flourish. Yao and Hu built their lead shot by shot, holding form as the series wore on, until the total left the field behind. What is striking is how little the pair seemed to register the milestone as it arrived. The focus stayed on the target, not the scoreboard.

"We didn't expect it at all; actually we didn't notice our results throughout the match," Yao said, crediting their victory to Hu. "We had a good performance today, especially my partner."

That composure, more than any single ten, defined the performance. The old record had stood only since April. A benchmark that recent tends to feel secure. Yao and Hu treated it as provisional.

A record on familiar ground

The result reads as confirmation rather than surprise. China's Sheng Lihao and Zhang Changhong took gold and silver in men's 10m air rifle on the same opening day, and the pistol pair added their own line to the tally. Yao and Hu arrived in Hangzhou as world champions, and the pairing has form together at the highest level.

They had already tested the world mark before. Two-time World Cup winning pair Yao Qianxun and Hu Kai of Anhui surpassed the world record en route to a commanding 17-9 victory over Shandong's Ma Qianke and Tian Kunzheng in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at China's 15th National Games. What was hinted at then became official in Hangzhou, under the sport's own governing body, with the figure entered into the record.

The partnership has known closer contests, including defeats to India's strongest pairs on the World Cup circuit. Wednesday answered them. A record set at home, quietly, and left standing for the next pair to chase.

Yao Qianxun looked up only after it was done.
