The scoreboard at Suhl told the story twice in one afternoon. Griffin Lake posted 632.1 in the Junior Men's 50m Rifle Prone, then anchored a 1764 in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Team. Two ISSF Junior World Championship records. Two gold medals. One day.
Two records, one afternoon
The prone gold came first in significance. Lake won the Junior Men's 50m Rifle Prone event while setting a World Junior Record, and Braden Peiser earned bronze in the same event, placing two Team USA athletes on the podium. A score of 632.1 leaves little room above it; prone rifle is a discipline of narrow margins, decided across sixty shots where a tenth of a point separates one shooter from the next. Lake found the ceiling.
The team record carried its own weight. In the Junior Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions Team event, Griffin Lake, Braden Peiser, and Tyler Wee captured gold and established a new World Junior Record. The winning total was exact and unforgiving. USA claimed the gold with a new junior world record total of 1764-107x while Norway took the silver , and India followed in third. The three-position event asks a shooter to fire kneeling, prone and standing, each posture with its own discipline. To rewrite the record across all three, as a unit, requires three shooters holding their nerve in turn.
The same trio was not finished. They followed with a silver medal in the Junior Men's 10m Air Rifle Team and bronze in the Junior Men's 50m Rifle Prone Team. Lake left Germany with the two marks that mattered most set under his own name.
A trajectory, not a surprise
This was not a bolt from nowhere. Lake had been building toward it in the same German range. Twelve months earlier, at the 2025 ISSF Suhl Junior World Cup, he opened with a third-place finish in the 50m prone. He secured a podium finish after firing an overall score of 624.6, his final score only 2.1 points behind the silver medalist, Adriyan Karmakar of India. The 632.1 at the World Championships is the answer to that near miss.
The wider record runs further back. Hailing from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Lake enjoyed a standout 2025 season, highlighted by an NCAA rifle championship title with West Virginia University in March, and he continued that run by capturing both the men's air rifle and smallbore titles at the 2025 USA Shooting Junior Olympic Championships. His international apprenticeship reaches back to a bronze in the Junior Men's 50m Rifle 3-Position event at the 2022 ISSF World Championships, with a return in Team USA colours at the 2024 Junior World Championships in Lima.
Suhl had seen him close before. Now it has seen him arrive. The record book holds his name twice, and the ink is his own.
