The Shaun White era began on a crisp February evening in the Italian Alps. At 19 years old, the American snowboarder rode to his first Olympic halfpipe gold medal on 17 February 2006, planting a flag for a career that would redefine the sport.
A near miss, then a flawless response
White placed a lowly seventh in his first qualification run. That left him one last chance to even reach the final in Bardonecchia. He seized it, delivering the highest-scoring run of the event to that point and booking his place among the 12 finalists.
One run to decide the title
In the final, he wasted no time. White stomped a backside 900 and two frontside 1,080° airs with a composure that belied his youth. The judges awarded 46.8 points out of a possible 50, a score that would stand as the gold-medal mark.
His American teammate Danny Kass, the silver medallist from Salt Lake City, took second again with 44.0 points. Finland’s Markku Koski claimed bronze with 41.5, but the night belonged to the red-haired teenager they called the Flying Tomato.
A foundation for a historic haul
That first crown in Turin proved the cornerstone of an Olympic dynasty. White defended the title at Vancouver 2010, unveiling his Double McTwist 1260. He later became the first snowboarder to win three Olympic halfpipe golds with his triumphant run at PyeongChang 2018.
An emotional fourth-place finish at Beijing 2022, his fifth Games, would close the circle sixteen years later. But the journey from precocious 19-year-old to icon was already complete.
