Van Opzeeland Wins iQFoil World Championship Title

Luuc van Opzeeland is the men's 2026 iQFoil world champion. The Dutch sailor took the title at Weymouth, England, on 12 September 2026. The crown was settled in the Medal Series final.

From second seed to the top of the podium

The Medal Series ran as a knockout ladder. As one of the top two ranked boards, Van Opzeeland was seeded straight to the Final and carried one match point into it. The chasing boards had to fight through a quarter-final and a semi-final first.

Johan Søe and Nicolas Goyard came through the semi-final to join Van Opzeeland and Noah Lyons in the deciding race. Van Opzeeland then added a win in the Final to take the series outright. Lyons finished second, Søe third, and no British board reached the men's Final.

A European champion converts on Olympic waters

He arrived at the regatta as the reigning European champion. After the Qualification Series he sat second overall on 65 points, behind Lyons and ahead of Søe. That result earned his direct seeding into the deciding stage.

The championship drew 187 athletes from 41 nations to the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. The venue staged the Olympic sailing events in 2012 and remains one of the sport's leading arenas. Open and U23 boards raced together, on the road to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The field brought together Olympic champions, reigning champions and rising talents. Defending world champion Andy Brown of Great Britain was among them, yet the home fleet fell short of the final. Van Opzeeland instead held his form across the week and closed it out when it counted.

The title marks a step up for Van Opzeeland, from continental honours to the world crown. It places him among the men to watch as that Olympic cycle unfolds.
