TNPC Wins Premier Women 500m Dragon Boat World Title

True North Paddling Club won the Premier Women 500m Standard Boat world title at the 15th IDBF Club Crew World Championships in Hualien, Chinese Taipei. The Canadian crew stopped the clock at 2:00.77 in the grand final on 2 September 2026.

An all-Canadian podium in lane four

TNPC drew lane four for the final, held on the second day of racing at the Hualien regatta course. From the start, the Toronto-based crew built a lead over a tightly packed Canadian field.

They crossed the line 1.09 seconds ahead of fellow Canadian crew 22Dragons, who finished in 2:01.86. The margin grew to 1.27 seconds over third-placed NDRC, who stopped the clock at 2:02.04.

Southbreeze of the United States placed fourth in 2:06.07, well back from the three Canadian boats that swept the podium. The clean sweep showed the strength of Canadian club paddling on the world stage.

A young club with broad reach

Formed in 2019, TNPC is one of Canada's newest dragon boat clubs. Based in Toronto, it fields six crews and is coached mainly by Chris Edwards, a Canadian Senior A National Team Coach with multiple international sprint canoe titles.

The win in Hualien was not a single highlight. Across the championships, TNPC reached five grand finals, winning gold in the Senior A Mixed 500m Small Boat event and silver in the Premier Mixed 200m Standard Boat final.

For a club barely seven seasons old, the Premier Women 500m title marks a quiet arrival at the top of the sport.
