Sarah-Quita Offringa reached the top of the Sotavento podium having done something she had never done before on this beach: lose ground and claw it back. Sarah-Quita Offringa won her 29th PWA world title at the 2026 Fuerteventura Grand Slam, her 18th in freestyle, completing a comeback through the double elimination and the superfinal.
A final decided twice
The decisive day arrived in punishing conditions.
Offringa secured the title in extreme conditions with gusts over 35 knots; the fourth competition day of the 2026 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam brought wind well above 35 knots and heavy residual swell that turned the water into a battlefield.
The conditions were far from ideal for technical perfection, almost too strong, which turned the heats into a fight for survival rather than a display of the best manoeuvres.
Maaike Huvermann of the Netherlands held the advantage.
Huvermann faced the day from the position of strength gained by winning the single elimination and needed only one victory to claim her first world championship, while Offringa had to reach her and beat her twice.
The Aruban set about the task methodically.
In the semi-final she first beat Germany's best freestyler, Lisa Kloster, setting up a rematch of the first final.
The first final began at 13:39 in demanding conditions, and Offringa took the lead and held it to the end, forcing a superfinal to decide the championship.
The superfinal started at 14:03; again Offringa moved to the front early, and Huvermann tried in the closing minutes with several completed manoeuvres to reduce the gap, but could not turn the result in her favour.
With the superfinal win Offringa completed her charge through the double elimination and secured her 18th freestyle world title and the 29th world title of her career.
Huvermann finished second, Lisa Kloster third, with Sandra Schill and Helena Derya Lale completing the top five.
A step further in a long story
The result adds one more chapter to a career few in the sport can match.
Offringa, born on 4 July 1991 in Oranjestad, took back-to-back freestyle world titles in 2010 and 2011 and also won the 2011 slalom world championship, earning an ISAF World Sailor of the Year nomination.
Fuerteventura has long been her stage, yet this title was earned differently: from behind, twice over.
The level of all the girls is rising sharply, so I had to give my best to meet the challenge.
She told reporters after the event that the field is pushing her harder than before.
As the only event on the calendar in the category, the Sotavento result directly determined the title, and the victory represents the 29th world championship of the Aruban's career.
She had never trailed here. She left, once again, in front.
