On 8 February 2022, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won the men's freestyle sprint at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. The victory, at Zhangjiakou in China, kept the Olympic sprint title he had first taken four years earlier. He remained the man to beat in the discipline.

A sprint crown held across two Games

The race was decided on the trails at Zhangjiakou. In PyeongChang, Klæbo had won the sprint in the classic style; in Beijing the sprint was skated in freestyle. He defended his crown across a change of technique.

The title opened his account at these Games. It confirmed his grip on the sport's fastest event, where a single misjudged metre can end a medal hope. Klæbo crossed first once more.

The win also set the tone for the days that followed. On 16 February, eight days later, Klæbo added team sprint gold alongside Erik Valnes. It was his second title of the Games.

From youngest champion to serial winner

At PyeongChang 2018, Klæbo had won the same event aged 21, becoming the youngest male Olympic champion in cross-country skiing history. He left that debut with three golds. Beijing showed the sprint was no early flourish but a lasting strength.

His record already ran wide by then. He had won the overall World Cup at 21, the youngest to lift the Crystal Globe, and the Tour de Ski at 22, the youngest champion in that event's history. The Beijing sprint fitted a pattern of early, repeated wins.

The freestyle sprint marked the start of a second golden Olympics and a longer climb still to come. In Norway's deep skiing tradition, his name was already among the leaders. Beijing was one chapter in a story that would keep growing.
