Raimo Vigants won the men’s 20 km mass start at the 2026 FIS Roller Ski World Championships in Madona, Latvia, becoming world champion on home soil.
A championship decided on the final day
The mass start was the closing event of the championships, held on 6 September. Vigants lined up against a broad international field that had travelled to Madona for a programme spanning interval starts, sprints, and team competitions. He arrived at the start with a team sprint gold already in his pocket from two days earlier.
Building through the week
Vigants had finished fourth in the 10 km interval start classic on the opening day, clocking 24:21.5 and trailing winner Andreas Bergsland of Norway by 1:10.1. On Friday, he teamed up with Lauris Kaparkalejs to win the team skate sprint, edging Sweden by just 0.5 seconds and Poland by 1.3 seconds in front of a home crowd.
The mass start asked a different challenge. It demanded endurance and tactical patience over 20 km, conditions in which Vigants had not yet stood on the podium that week. His response delivered the title that capped Latvia’s championships.
Context in a growing discipline
Over 40 finishers from at least 17 nations competed in the men’s events at Madona, making these world championships a genuinely global test. Roller skiing’s reach stretched from Scandinavia to South America and Asia in the Latvian start lists. A victory here carried weight beyond the host nation.
Vigants, born in 1999, had shown his form earlier in the championships. But the individual gold medal had eluded him until the mass start. His team sprint partner Kaparkalejs placed 14th in the 10 km, a mark of the field’s depth and the step Vigants took alone on the final day.
On home rollers, in front of his own people, Vigants closed the week as a world champion.
