Emanuele Becchis of Italy won the men’s 200m skate sprint world title at the 2026 FIS Roller Ski World Championships in Madona, Latvia, on 5 September. The victory came on the same city-centre course where he had failed to reach the semi-finals seven years earlier.
A sprint decided in plain sight of a thousand
The Madona course climbed slightly through the centre of town, a layout that leaves no room for hesitation. Becchis moved through qualification, quarter-finals and semi-finals with the compact rhythm that marks his late-career form. French sprinter Simon Clavel, a genuine threat, saw his run cut short in the quarter-finals.
With Clavel out, Becchis took charge of the final. He appeared on the post-race image beside compatriot Michele Valerio and Latvian Lauris Kaparkalejs, while the home crowd had extra reason to celebrate when Linda Kaparkaleja claimed the women’s 200m crown.
The steep climb from 2019 to gold
At the 2019 World Championships in the same Latvian town, Becchis did not make the cut. That year the title went to Norway’s Ragnar Andresen, his fifth individual world gold, and roughly a thousand spectators watched the 16 fastest men move on. Becchis was not among them.
