Kipyegon Takes Third Straight Olympic 1500m Gold

On the last night of track at the Stade de France, Faith Kipyegon won a third straight Olympic 1500m gold. She crossed the line in 3:51.29, an Olympic record. No athlete, man or woman, had ever taken the same track event at three separate Games.

A fearless last lap decides the final

Kipyegon held back early, letting Gudaf Tsegay set the pace. She moved onto the Ethiopian's shoulder just after the first lap and waited.

Tsegay led at the bell, then faded fast. With 200 metres left, the Kenyan kicked for home and opened a gap through the final turn.

Jessica Hull and Georgia Bell chased but never closed. Kipyegon crossed the line about 7 metres clear, her treble sealed. Hull took silver in 3:52.56 and Bell bronze in a British record 3:52.61.

Two seconds off her own Olympic mark, after a draining week

The time cut two seconds from the Olympic record she set in Tokyo. It also made her the first woman to win three Olympic golds in a single track discipline, after Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021.

The final came days after a hard 5000m, where she was disqualified and then had her silver restored on appeal. That case cost her sleep and energy across the middle of the Games.

"It's a big, big achievement," Kipyegon told reporters afterwards. "I was really looking forward to defending my title and I had a dream."

With four world titles and the world record already in hand, the Paris run left little doubt about her place in the middle-distance story.
