Kipyegon Defends Olympic 1500m Title in Record 3:53.11

Faith Kipyegon defended her Olympic 1500m title in Tokyo. She crossed the line in 3:53.11, an Olympic record. The win came at the Japan National Stadium on 6 August 2021.

A late strike with 250m to run

Sifan Hassan took the lead after just 300m, hoping to blunt Kipyegon's finishing speed. The Kenyan settled onto her shoulder and waited. Hassan led for 1000m, but the race was never truly hers.

With 250m left, Kipyegon struck. She swept past Hassan and powered clear over the final 200m. She closed her last 400m in 59.18, leaving the field behind.

Only the second woman to defend the 1500m crown

The mark erased Paula Ivan's Olympic record from 1988. Kipyegon became only the second woman to defend the Olympic 1500m title, after Tatyana Kazankina. Laura Muir took silver in a British record, and Hassan faded to bronze in 3:55.86.

The victory came three years after Kipyegon gave birth to her first child. It confirmed the form that had already carried her past Hassan in Monaco. In Rio five years earlier she had won her first Olympic gold.

Muir, second across the line, offered the plainest tribute. "She's the greatest of all time," the Briton told reporters. She added that Kipyegon "doesn't get enough credit."

Tokyo marked the second in what would become a run of Olympic 1500m golds. Her story was far from finished.
