Keely Hodgkinson won the women's 800m at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun. Days after turning 19, she became the youngest champion in the event's history. The final was her senior international championship debut.
Front-running from gun to line in Torun
Hodgkinson led from the front on the closing day inside Arena Torun, setting the pace from the gun. She held off the home pair of Joanna Jóźwik and Angelika Cichocka, who chased her hard down the finishing straight in front of a Polish crowd. She crossed the line in 2:03.88.
The finish was tight. Jóźwik took silver in 2:04.00, only 0.12s behind, with Angelika Cichocka third in 2:04.15. Earlier in the meeting she had won her semi-final in 2:03.11, the fastest time of anyone in that round.
Britain's youngest champion since 1970
The win made her Britain's youngest European Indoor champion since 1970. She had travelled to Poland with no senior medal to her name, into a field of 35 runners from 18 nations. Four days past her 19th birthday, she showed the composure of a far older runner.
It was the first senior title of a career that grew quickly. Olympic silver in Tokyo followed that summer, and in 2024 she won Olympic gold in Paris. She became the first British woman to take the Olympic 800m title since Kelly Holmes in 2004.
The result was hard for her to take in at first. "You never understand the shock of when it actually happens," Hodgkinson told BBC Sport. "You picture it in your head so many times but when the reality comes through it's very different."
Five years on, Keely Hodgkinson returned to the same arena in Torun for the world indoor final. There she won her first global title, adding World Indoor gold to her name. The story had come full circle.
