On a cold Swedish afternoon in Are, Marcel Hirscher carved his name deeper into alpine history. He won his seventh World Championship gold medal in the men’s slalom, equaling Toni Sailer’s all-time Austrian record.
A sick champion seizes the first run
Hirscher arrived on race day recovering from an illness that had left him drained only twenty-four hours earlier. He still set the fastest opening run, threading the gates to build a 0.56-second advantage over France’s Alexis Pinturault.
Marco Schwarz sat third at halfway. Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen, who had beaten Hirscher to giant slalom gold two days prior, languished in sixth, already 1.70 seconds adrift.
A clean sweep decided on the final pitch
Pinturault’s challenge dissolved when a slip midway down the course cost him any chance of closing the gap. Hirscher, freed from his closest pursuer, responded with one of the finest runs of his career.
He pulled away decisively, stopping the clock 0.65 seconds ahead of compatriot Michael Matt. Schwarz held on for third, completing the first Austrian podium sweep at a World Championship since the women’s downhill in 2001.
Seven golds, three slaloms, one name
The gold drew Hirscher level with Sailer’s long-standing men’s record and also secured his third consecutive slalom world crown. Only Ingemar Stenmark had achieved such a streak before, across 1978, 1980 and 1982.
“I feel happy because at this time yesterday I felt really bad,” he told reporters afterwards, the relief finally cutting through the fatigue. Two days after a rare defeat, he stood again at the top of his sport.
A quiet closing act in Sweden, and the weight of a national record simply absorbed into the groove of another trophy lift.
