Gout Gout ran 19.67 seconds in the 200 metres in Sydney on 12 April 2026. That time broke Erriyon Knighton’s world under-20 record of 19.69. The wind was legal, at 1.7 metres per second, and Gout became the first Australian to break 20 seconds in a legal race.
A late surge past Murphy wins it
The final took place at Sydney Olympic Park on a dry evening. Gout trailed Aidan Murphy as they came off the bend. The two stayed level until the last 30 metres.
Then Gout changed gear, the way he often does, and pulled clear. The clock first read 19.68, then dropped to 19.67. Murphy crossed in 19.88, more than half a second faster than his old best of 20.41.
Seven of the eight finalists set personal bests. In one race, the whole field ran faster than ever.
One name above him, a great behind
Gout took 0.02 seconds off Knighton’s 2022 mark. Knighton once ran 19.49 as a junior, but that time was never ratified. So Gout’s legal 19.67 now sits second on the all-time under-20 list, one place ahead of Usain Bolt, whose best before 20 was 19.88.
The run came a year after Gout’s wind-assisted 19.84 at the 2025 national titles. It also came weeks after he ran 10.00 in the 100 metres in Brisbane. Last September he reached the 200-metre semifinals at the World Championships in Tokyo, aged 17.
“This is what I’ve been waiting for,” Gout told reporters afterwards at the Olympic Park. “There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I ran it legally, and I have the speed and my body to run times like that. So, it definitely feels great, and I’m ready for more.”
World Athletics must still ratify the mark. Even so, the Brisbane-born 18-year-old has taken his event where no Australian had gone before.
