For five years, the men's 400 metres hurdles record stood untouched, a monument to a ferocious Olympic final. On a warm Thursday night in Zurich, Alison dos Santos tore it down. The Brazilian stopped the clock at 45.80 at the Weltklasse Diamond League, erasing Karsten Warholm's 45.94 from the books.
A stagger erased by halfway
Drawn in lane six with Warholm outside him, dos Santos made up the stagger on the Norwegian before the midpoint. He then pulled clear over the closing barriers, leaving the former record holder far behind. Warholm crossed a distant second in 46.69, a fast time made ordinary by the man ahead of him.
From Tokyo bronze to the top of the world
The performance rewrites a record that had belonged to Warholm since the Tokyo Olympic final, a race in which dos Santos took bronze. His previous personal best of 46.29, set when he won the world title in Eugene in 2022, placed him third on the all-time list. Thursday's run carved 0.49 seconds from that mark and settled a hierarchy frozen for half a decade.
The record arrived four days after dos Santos set a world lead of 46.43 in Silesia. He described that race as one run almost entirely with the wrong lead leg. In Zurich, the rhythm was perfect from the first barrier, and the result was the first improvement of the men's 400 metres hurdles record in five years.
"The crowd and the energy were perfect," he told reporters afterwards. "I hope Brazil stopped to watch it." He added that he looked for his coach the moment he crossed the line, calling him the one who made the performance possible.
The mark is subject to World Athletics' usual ratification procedure. For dos Santos, the run places a quiet exclamation point on a season of relentless speed.
