Gout Gout opened his 2026 campaign with a legal personal best of 10.00 seconds in the 100 metres at the Dane Bird‑Smith Shield Meet in Brisbane.
A quiet entry, a loud statement
The Queensland native entered the meet almost unnoticed. His manager later revealed the decision was made only a week beforehand, because recent training had looked sharp.
With a mild tailwind of +0.9 metres per second, Gout powered home in 10.00. The run set a new Australian under‑20 record, erasing the mark Jake Doran had held since 2018.
Equalling a home‑soil best
The time also matched the fastest 100 metres ever run by an Australian on home soil. It placed the teenager joint‑ninth on the world all‑time under‑20 list, just 0.09 seconds behind Olympic 200‑metre champion Letsile Tebogo.
Before Brisbane, Gout had twice dipped under ten seconds with illegal wind in Perth a year earlier. This was his quickest legal clocking, and it came in a discipline he still treats as his secondary event.
Reflecting later, Gout was candid about the season opener. “I have done 10‑flat in my season opener and that race was a bit rocky,” he said, hinting there was more to give over the shorter sprint.
His primary focus remained the half‑lap. Six weeks after this run, he would lower the world under‑20 200‑metre record to 19.67, confirming the Brisbane dash was merely an early signal of a special year.
