Goodness Nwachukwu threw 39.66m in Glasgow to break her own F42 discus world record and win Commonwealth gold. It was her second world mark across consecutive Games. She saved the decisive throw for her final attempt.
A final-round throw rewrites the record
Goodness Nwachukwu built steadily through the competition, then produced her best when it mattered most. At Scotstoun Stadium, her closing effort reached 39.66m, and the scoreboard flashed the mark of a new world record. The crowd rose as the measuring line settled on the field.
The distance moved her clear of the field with room to spare. Wales provided the chase, yet neither rival could stay close to her range. The final round alone decided the colour of every medal on the podium.
More than three metres beyond her old mark
The throw improved her own F42 world record by more than three metres. She first set the mark on her way to gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, then raised it again here in Glasgow. The result was also a successful defence of her title.
Behind her, Funmi Oduwaiye of Wales took silver with 38.52m, while Bree Cronin claimed bronze with a season best of 36.00m. The gold was Nigeria's seventh of these Games. Team Nigeria's campaign kept gathering medals across para sport.
She has spoken about what these stages mean to her and how the setting stayed with her. "Walking into the stadium and seeing thousands of people waiting to watch me compete was something I will never forget," she said ahead of Glasgow 2026.
