Daniek Hengeveld crossed the line on Holterweg and stopped the clock at 45:12. The wait began. She had taken the hot seat with eight riders left on the course. One of them was her own team-mate. When Femke de Vries reached the finish, her effort fell short by the smallest of margins.
Daniek Hengeveld claimed the Dutch national time trial title on Wednesday evening, the 23-year-old from Team Visma | Lease a Bike keeping her team-mate Femke de Vries just behind her on the 36-kilometre course in Laren, with Lieke Nooijen completing a yellow-and-black podium in third. Two seconds separated first from second. A team swept the medals.
A course learned by heart
Conditions shaped the day. Laren, in Gelderland, was hot, and the organisers were forced to act: the riders would start much later, the first rolling off the platform at 5:15 p.m. to avoid the hottest hours and the highest UV readings. The route offered no hiding place. A flat course took riders through Harfsen for the first check at kilometre 5.1, then a second at kilometre 13.4 on Old Street, before passing the finish on Holterweg for the first time, with the circuit completed a second time in that order.
Hengeveld attacked it from the gun. She got off to a flying start and clocked the fastest time at the second, third and fourth intermediate points, while De Vries had paced her time trial differently, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish. Two riders, two strategies, one title between them. The pacing gamble almost held for the challenger. It did not. Hengeveld's early margin proved just enough to survive the final circuit.
A title, not a podium
The favourites were present. Mischa Bredewold, of SD Worx-Protime, aimed to defend her title, but was not handed a second consecutive Dutch crown. Hengeveld delivered the time trial of her life and dethroned her. For a rider who had not counted on gold, the scale of the result took a moment to settle.
"Winning the title came as a surprise, although I'd secretly hoped to finish on the podium," Hengeveld said. "I scouted the course several times, spent the whole of last week on my time trial bike and rode as hard as I could today. I couldn't have done any more."
This is her first elite national title, an arrival rather than a coronation. She had aimed only for the podium and left with the jersey. The two seconds she found in Laren were hers alone.
