Brennan Takes Third Vuelta Stage on Grand Tour Debut

Matthew Brennan claimed his third stage win of the 2026 Vuelta a España on Stage 11, converting a tricky finish in Lorca with a sprint that no rival could match.

A hat-trick sealed on the final corner

The 192-kilometre run from Cartagena to Lorca wound through a finale of tight bends and street furniture. Approaching the decisive U-turn, Wout van Aert guided his young teammate into position, shielding him through an almost 180-degree corner at speed.

Once they straightened up, Brennan kicked clear with 150 metres remaining. No one came close to catching him.

The British rider held off Bryan Coquard without fuss, while Jordi Meeus edged Magnus Cort Nielsen for third. Van Aert, the pilot, rolled home fifth as Brennan raised three fingers across the line.

Ten days, three stages, one debut

Brennan had already won Stage 2 in Manosque and Stage 9 earlier in the race. This third victory made him the first rider to take a hat-trick on his Grand Tour debut since Tadej Pogačar achieved the same at the 2019 Vuelta.

Among pure sprinters, the feat reaches even further back. Fernando Gaviria was the last to win three stages on his first Grand Tour appearance, at the 2017 Giro d'Italia.

"We took the initiative today again, and the boys pulled as hard as they could," Brennan told reporters afterwards.

Enric Mas finished safely in the bunch to keep the red jersey. Brennan left Lorca with something rarer still: a debut the record books had not seen in seven years.
