Salice Terme, decided in the final kilometre
Célia Gery crossed the line in Salice Terme with a small margin and a settled sprint, the first professional victory of her career arriving at a Grand Tour. On stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia Women 2026, the twenty-year-old from FDJ-Suez outsprinted Lucinda Brand of Lidl-Trek and Chantal Pegolo to win from a late breakaway. It was France's first stage win of this edition.
The 159-kilometre road from Sorbolo Mezzani opened with a long flat run, and the day's move formed inside the first fifteen kilometres. Five riders built a lead that stretched close to nine minutes. The race changed on the third-category climb to Pietragavina, the only classified ascent, with just under twenty-seven kilometres left. Gery slipped clear on the descent with Silvia Persico, bridging to the front of the race, and Brand and Elisa Longo Borghini came across too. A group of six now held the front.
Behind, the day had already turned severe. A mass crash inside the final sixty kilometres brought down the race leader, Anna van der Breggen, among others. The peloton could not wait. What followed was a pursuit. The breakaway held roughly forty seconds at the ten-kilometre mark, and the sprinters' teams closed hard, the gap shrinking to a handful of seconds by the line. Longo Borghini drove the front group in search of general classification time and finished fifth; the peloton arrived eight seconds down. Gery, freed from the pace-making when Longo Borghini took over the work, waited, then read the sprint.
A first win, arriving early
The context makes the result read clearly. Gery came to professional ranks as a former junior world champion, a rider marked as one to watch rather than one who had yet delivered. This was the step from promise to result: a stage of a Grand Tour, taken against experienced company. Brand, at thirty-six, has a long record across disciplines. The finish framed the generations against each other, and the younger rider held her nerve.
"I hadn't even thought about winning before the stage, I'm really, really happy," Gery told reporters afterwards.
She described the tactical shape of it plainly. She had accelerated on the climb to position her leader, then found herself separated and worried she had erred. When Longo Borghini bridged up, the work was no longer hers to do. In the final she could play the sprint on her own terms, with Brand alongside also chasing the stage.
For a rider of twenty, a first win rarely comes with such weight attached. Gery has it now, and the record will read Salice Terme.
