Namika Yamashita became the 2026 IBC World Tour Open Women's World Champion on Friday, securing her first world title at the ArcelorMittal Wahine Bodyboarding Pro in Jacaraípe, Brazil. The Japanese rider turned a season of consistent dominance into a career-defining crown.
A heat decided in the final seconds
The title-clinching moment arrived late on a rain-soaked morning at Praia do Solemar. Under rain and in difficult wave conditions, Yamashita entered the second heat of round six needing only a quarterfinal berth to make the mathematics unassailable.
She took it in the dying moments.
Runner-up no longer
A year earlier, on this same beach, a quarterfinal exit against Neymara Carvalho had handed the crown to Alexandra Rinder. Yamashita finished second in the 2025 world rankings. The memory sharpened a season that broke cleanly in her favour from the start.
She arrived in Espírito Santo with 6,000 points, built on victories in the Maldives and at the Sintra Bodyboard Pro Fest only twelve days earlier. Her main challenger, Brazil's Luna Hardman, advanced through her own heat but had already run out of road — eliminated in the quarterfinals with no path left to the summit.
"I was very nervous, needing a score, and I took my chance," Yamashita told reporters afterwards. "I'm very happy to be world champion."
At 24, she becomes only the third Japanese woman to win the Open Women's World Title, following Ayaka Suzuki and Sari Ohhara. The record books now carry a name that had been knocking for years.
