A clean sweep on the sand

The final left no room for argument. Russia proved unequivocally stronger across a mixed lineup of women at 72 kg and over 72 kg, and men at 71 kg, 88 kg and over 88 kg. They did not drop a single bout, sealing the gold medal with a shutout win.

Romania's battle to reach the final

The Russian team's path had been equally dominant, with straightforward wins over Costa Rica and Israel. Romania faced a far sterner test. Their semifinal against Kazakhstan became the tournament's defining contest, a nail-biter that stretched to a fifth and final bout before Romania edged it 3-2.

Kazakhstan had earlier ended host Brazil's hopes with a quick victory. When the deciding bout hit the sand, however, Romania held firm to survive and take their place in the title match.

One more world crown

The bronze medals went to Kazakhstan and Israel, who beat Costa Rica in the third-place contest. Final standings placed Russia on top, Romania with silver, and both Israel and Kazakhstan stepping onto the podium in third.

On a day when the mixed team format tested depth across five weight classes, Russia offered no openings and returned home with the world crown.
