On 28 January 2017 in Melbourne, Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the Australian Open final without dropping a set, claiming an Open-era record 23rd Grand Slam singles title. Unknown to the crowd, she had played the entire tournament while roughly eight weeks pregnant.

A secret carried onto the court

The final began with a tense exchange of breaks. Serena struck first, Venus levelled at 2–2, and the set stood at 3–3 before Serena broke again with a clean backhand down the line.

Serving for the set, she reached 30–0 and held three set points, closing it with an ace. Venus held firmly to lead 3–2 in the second, but Serena refused to let the match drift.

One last sisterly duel decided

At 3–3, a sharp backhand from Serena and a forehand error from Venus handed her the critical break. Venus saved championship points on her own serve before Serena forced a final opportunity, taking it when Venus lobbed out.

The 6-4, 6–4 win marked the ninth and final time the Williams sisters met in a major final. Serena did not lose a single set across the entire tournament.

Regaining the summit, quietly

The victory delivered Serena her seventh Australian Open title and returned her to world No. 1 at 35 years and four months old — still the oldest woman to win a singles major in the Open era. It broke Steffi Graf's mark of 22 majors, a number Serena had equalled at Wimbledon the previous July.

Only months later, in April 2017, a Snapchat post captioned "20 weeks" revealed the pregnancy. Observers calculated she had been about eight weeks along during the Australian Open. Williams later recalled her friend Jessica urging her to test after arriving in Melbourne. "I'm just like, ‘Please,'" she told journalists.

The quietest secret in Melbourne had produced the loudest result of her career.
