Fils Wins First Masters 1000 Title in Cincinnati

Arthur Fils fell to his knees on the P&G Stadium Court after a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 win over Frances Tiafoe. The victory gave the 21st seed his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the 2026 Cincinnati Open.

A final that swung three ways

The match lasted just 88 minutes and barely settled into a pattern. Fils overpowered Tiafoe early, winning 12 of 13 points to build a 3-0 lead and close the opening set. Tiafoe answered by taking the first three games of the second to level the contest.

Decided in a closing bagel

Fils broke at once in the decider, landing a forehand winner on the deciding point for a 2-0 lead. He struck again for 4-0 and held firm, aggressive on the return and dominant off the forehand wing. Tiafoe saved two match points before a final forehand drifted long on the third.

The final marked the first time two Black players met in a Masters 1000 title match. At 22, Fils became the youngest French champion in the series' history and ended a 12-year wait for a French winner at this level.

Fils arrived ranked outside the top 20 and left as the sixth man to capture multiple tour titles this season. He finished the week on a 10-0 record in three-set matches in 2026 and improved to 8-0 against Americans since the start of 2025.

The closing bagel was the sharpest signature of a breakthrough that places a young Frenchman squarely among the sport's new guard.
