On 4 August 2011, in downtown Los Angeles, Shaun White became the first athlete in history to claim medals at both the Winter and Summer X Games. He captured skateboard vert gold with a decisive final run, adding a summer prize to a collection already heavy with snowboarding silverware.
A ramp in LA, a title on the line
The Skateboard Vert final at L.A. Live turned into a duel. Pierre-Luc Gagnon, the defending champion, had set the mark with a score of 91.66. White, already a winter icon, stood at the top of the ramp needing one clean sequence to overtake him.
93 points when it mattered most
White dropped in and unspooled a dizzying string of acrobatics. The judges rewarded the run with 93.00 points, edging Gagnon by a slender margin. “I’d be lying to say I wasn’t standing up there at the very top like, ‘You could blow it right now or you could just win it.’ I went with win it,” he told reporters afterwards.
Gagnon, visibly stunned, fell on his ultimate attempt. As the jam-session clock expired, White erupted, hugging fans around the arena. Bucky Lasek, a four-time vert gold medalist, took bronze.
Two golds, two sports, one record
This was White’s second Summer X Games skateboard vert gold, arriving four years after his first in 2007. By then he had already amassed 13 Winter X Games gold medals and stood as the most decorated athlete in the event’s history. The Los Angeles win stitched the two halves of his career together, making him the sole athlete to medal across the summer and winter editions.
His skateboarding prowess, often overshadowed by snowboarding fame, had placed him among the best vert riders on the planet for several seasons.
