The shuttle fell silent inside the Istora Senayan, and Victor Lai stood with his hands on his head. He had etched his name into Canadian badminton history, becoming the first Canadian ever to win a BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament with a 21-19, 21-8 victory over Indonesia's Jonatan Christie in the men's singles final of the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026. With his hands on his head in disbelief, Lai soaked in the moment before wrapping his country's flag around his shoulders.
How the final turned
The match began with the home crowd behind their man. Christie took the early lead in the opening game, but Lai caught up slowly and took the opener. The margin was fine: 21-19. Then the contest broke open. In the second game the 21-year-old took a 6-1 lead and outplayed Christie. The scoreline read 21-8. He saw victory getting closer with each point, something he achieved after 39 minutes.
The upset was defined as much by nerve as by shot-making. What was unusual about the victory was that it was his far more experienced rival who cracked under the pressure of playing in front of the raucous crowd. Christie has played at the Istora for over a decade; yet, in his quest for a first Indonesia Open title, he fell apart. In contrast was his 21-year-old rival, in the biggest final of his career, who went about his business with the assurance of a seasoned pro. Christie was plain about it afterwards. "He played with nothing to lose. He played in front of the full house, and he was very very calm. He didn't make any mistakes, but I did. I felt too much pressure," he said.
The path there was demanding. Lai's run started with world No. 9 Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei, beaten 21-12, 21-18. In the round of 16 he faced Koki Watanabe of Japan, downing him 21-10, 21-9. In the quarterfinals he beat Toma Junior Popov of France, then faced his most difficult match against world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen, losing his only game on the way to the championship 21-19, 19-21, 21-19.
A trajectory taking shape
The title crowns a rising season. Last year Lai became the first Canadian to win a medal at the BWF World Championships, claiming bronze after a quarter-final win over former world champion Loh Kean Yew and a semi-final defeat to world No. 1 Shi Yuqi. He carried that momentum into 2026, reaching the semi-finals of the India Open before becoming the first Canadian in nearly five decades to reach the All England semi-finals. His coach saw a threshold crossed. "He had several decisive wins against top players in the world and capped it off against one of Indonesia's finest. The future is bright for a now top-10 Canadian player," said Mike Butler.
There was reverence in the winner's words. "When I was younger I used to watch him all the time, so it feels amazing to have played against him as well," Lai said of Christie. A boy who watched, now a champion who beat him.
