Hungarian club Veszprém HC won their second IHF Men's Club World Championship on 1 October 2026. They beat FC Barcelona 42:33 in the final at the Sports Hall in Egypt.
Nielsen stops the game
Goalkeeper Emil Nielsen played for Barcelona before joining Veszprém this summer. He returned from a stomach bug to stop the attack. He saved five of the first seven shots.
This led to an 8-1 run that made the score 9-3 in just nine minutes. Nielsen made nine saves in the first half. Veszprém led 22-16 at the break.
Records fall and the final ends
Barcelona had won 64 games in a row before this match. That streak ended in Egypt.
The final ended with a nine-goal gap. This was the biggest win margin in the event’s history. The 42 goals scored by Veszprém also set a new record.
Nielsen was named the best player of the tournament. Teammate Hugo Descat scored 35 goals in total. He scored ten in the final alone.
Coach Xavi Pascual won his seventh title in this competition. This was Veszprém's second world crown. The club had made the final three times in a row.
