On 28 January 2024, Jannik Sinner clawed back from two sets down against Daniil Medvedev to win the Australian Open. It was the Italian's first Grand Slam title and the first ever for an Italian man in Melbourne.
From the brink on Rod Laver Arena
Medvedev controlled the opening exchanges with his signature deep returning and unyielding baseline defence. Sinner faced a steep deficit but kept his service games clean under enormous pressure. The match stood at a crossroads deep in the third set.
A single break of serve turned the tide. Sinner found his range, his groundstrokes growing heavier with each game. He claimed the third set, drew level in the fourth, and then ran away with the decider to close out a 3–2 victory on Rod Laver Arena.
A national first and a turning point
With the win, Sinner became the first Italian man to lift the trophy in Melbourne. The achievement arrived only weeks after he had led Italy to its first Davis Cup title since 1976.
The Melbourne comeback unlocked a remarkable trajectory. Sinner rose to world No. 1 later that season, claimed the US Open, and went on to become the first Italian Wimbledon champion. He would eventually complete the Career Golden Masters, holding all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles simultaneously.
That night in Melbourne was the foundation. It remains the afternoon the sport understood Sinner would not retreat when the circumstance hardened.
