Ronnie O'Sullivan compiled the highest break in professional snooker history during his quarter-final against Ryan Day at the World Open in Yushan, China. The 153 cleared the previous best by five points and arrived in a match he won in just 56 minutes.
A free ball and a flawless clearance
The moment came early. After Day left a free ball in the first frame, O'Sullivan nominated a black and never looked back.
He constructed the break with 14 blacks and two pinks, then deposited all the colours in sequence. A delicate stroke on the final black carried him to 153 — two points shy of the absolute ceiling of 155.
A record twenty years in the making
Jamie Burnett had held the professional high-break record since 2004, when he made a 148 in UK Championship qualifying. O'Sullivan already owned the sport's fastest 147, set in 1997 at five minutes and eight seconds.
He has now recorded more than 17 official maximums in competition. The quarter-final was over almost as soon as it began, with further runs of 110, 103, 95 and 62 sweeping Day 5–0.
"Did it really happen?"
Former world No. 3 Neal Foulds, commentating for TNT Sports, could barely frame the moment. "A privilege to be here to watch that," he said. "A break of 153, it's almost like: 'Did it really happen? Have I dreamt it?' Incredible stuff."
A man who has spent three decades reshaping what is possible on a snooker table had just raised the bar once more — quietly, swiftly, and with a cue still loose in his hand.
