Zhao Xintong has reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Snooker Championship, and he has done so as the defending champion and the tournament's top seed. Twelve months after his maiden Crucible title, the man from Shenzhen returned to Sheffield carrying the weight of a first defence. He now stands among the last eight.
The route was not smooth. In the first round he saw off Liam Highfield 10-7. The second round brought Ding Junhui, the elder statesman of Chinese snooker, in an all-Chinese meeting heavy with occasion. Zhao came through it 13-9. He admitted afterwards that the tension had been considerable, telling reporters the pressure had felt enormous against a compatriot he has long admired. It was the performance of a player learning to win when the cue arm is not free.
Now Shaun Murphy waits in the quarterfinal, over three sessions across two days. The pairing carries its own history. Murphy beat Zhao in the first round of the 2024 UK Championship, during the comeback, and again spoke this week of the danger of being drawn into the Chinese player's fast, fluent rhythm. Zhao, nicknamed the Cyclone for that attacking pace, arrives as the form player of the season.
The long way back
To measure this run, recall where Zhao stood two years ago. In January 2023 he was suspended amid a match-fixing investigation and later banned, losing his professional status. He returned through the amateur Q Tour, winning event after event, and qualified for the 2025 World Championship as an amateur. There he beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 17-7 in the semifinal and Mark Williams 18-12 in the final, becoming the first Chinese player, the first Asian player and the first amateur to win the title.
The season that followed confirmed the win was no accident. Zhao took the Riyadh Season title, then claimed back-to-back ranking crowns at the World Grand Prix, beating Zhang Anda 10-6, and the Players Championship, beating John Higgins 10-7. Those results completed the first Players Series Slam and lifted him to a career-high world ranking of fourth. He also compiled his first professional maximum break along the way.
A title to defend
That trajectory gives this quarterfinal its shape. The 2025 champion arrived at the Crucible as a qualifier with nothing to protect. The 2026 contender arrives as world champion, seeded first, expected to win. The difference is the whole point. To reach the last eight while carrying that expectation is a separate test, and Zhao Xintong has passed the early part of it.
A year ago he was the outsider who made history. Now he is the man the others are trying to catch.
