On Court Simonne-Mathieu, seventeen-year-old Moïse Kouamé closed out a 7-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Marin Čilić, the former US Open champion, and let the noise of a home crowd wash over him.
Kouamé, a wildcard, beat the former world No. 3 on his Roland Garros debut, and needed a moment to compose himself as a packed crowd chanted his name.
The result made him the youngest player to reach the second round in Paris since 1991, at seventeen years and eighty-two days.
The match turned early.
Kouamé dug in to stay with Čilić at the start, saving the only three break points in the first set as the experienced Croatian tried to overwhelm him. After clinching the opener in the tie-break, Kouamé rode his momentum to a commanding two-hour, 38-minute win.
A first tour-level win on clay, it was also his first in three attempts against a top-50 opponent.
He converted four of the seven break points he earned against the big-serving 37-year-old.
As his lead grew, his confidence showed.
Perhaps the highlight came on the first point at 3-1 in the third set, when Kouamé stretched to repel a huge Čilić forehand before gesturing to the delighted home crowd.
A composure beyond his years
What marked the performance was calm rather than nerve.
He never looked bothered by the gap in age and experience; the Frenchman stepped onto one of the sport's biggest stages and played with the composure of someone who belonged there.
He put it plainly afterwards.
"I didn't care about his age, I just wanted to give him shots that were as complicated to play as possible," Kouamé said.
"A lot of emotions, of course. It's exceptional," Kouamé said.
The win sits within a fast rise.
Tuesday's victory was the latest in a string of breakthrough moments for Kouamé, who began 2026 by winning two ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments.
He made his tour-level debut as a qualifier at the ATP 250 in Montpellier and earned his first ATP Tour win in Miami.
Born and raised in the French capital, coached by Richard Gasquet, he credits that recent schedule.
"The experience I got from Miami, Monte-Carlo and also Montpellier probably helped me," he said.
The numbers followed.
Having started 2026 as the World No. 876, Kouamé has now ensured he will break the Top 300 after Roland Garros.
He is the first player born in 2009 to win a match at a major.
For one afternoon in Paris, the youngest man on the grounds looked the most at ease.
