On the afternoon of 29 June 2026, on No.2 Court at the All England Club, Michael Zheng struck a forehand down the line and then broke Cameron Norrie in one long rally to close a match that had run for more than four hours. Norrie led by a set twice, winning two tie-breaks, before losing to the world No.144 by 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(10-4). A qualifier had beaten a former Wimbledon semi-finalist on his Grand Slam main-draw debut.
Both men were finding their feet through the opening two sets, but the match ignited in the third and built towards its conclusion. Norrie missed the chance to serve for the first set at 5-4, and needed three set points in the tie-break before crossing the line with crushing forehands into the American's backhand. Zheng answered. He stepped up in the second, dropping only three points behind his first serve and saving three break points to level.
Decided in the tie-break
The American moved through the fourth set in 33 minutes, and Norrie had to be at his best to stay with him in the decider. Norrie showed the grit for which he is known, saving three break points late in the fifth, including one net cord that trickled onto Zheng's side. Norrie overturned a mini-break twice in the match tie-break, but Zheng kept the pressure on and claimed a decisive point with a forehand down the line at 4-3. He then found another gear, delivering winner after winner to create five match points. He finished with 21 aces and 74 winners. He was broken only once.
The result reads more sharply against the men on either side of the net. Norrie was last year's quarter-finalist, and this was the first time he had lost a five-set match at Wimbledon, having won his previous three. Zheng's own path has been steep. He is a recent Columbia University graduate, a two-time NCAA singles champion and the university's first since 1906. He began the 2025 season ranked No.759, broke into the top 500 in June and the top 200 in October, and reached a career high in March 2026.
A season of firsts
The Wimbledon win extends a run of debuts. He qualified for the Australian Open, saved a match point against Klein in the final round, then beat his countryman Korda for a first tour-level win. He qualified for Roland Garros without dropping a set, beating the top seed de Jong along the way. This was a junior Wimbledon finalist returning to the grass as a man.
