Summer McIntosh did something no swimmer had managed in seventeen years during the week of 7–11 June 2025, breaking three individual world records at one meet — the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia.
A barrier falls on opening night
The run began in the 400-metre freestyle on Saturday. McIntosh touched in 3:54.18, carving 1.20 seconds from Ariarne Titmus's 2023 mark and becoming the first woman under 3:55.00. She won by more than 13 seconds, racing only the clock.
Two more records in three days
On Tuesday she faced the 200-metre individual medley. Her 2:05.70 erased Katinka Hosszú's decade-old world record from 2015. One night later she closed the meet with the 400-metre individual medley, opening with a 59.18 butterfly split and never easing to finish in 4:23.65.
Mary-Sophie Harvey finished second in the 400 IM some twelve seconds back. Across the week, McIntosh also set Canadian marks in the 800-metre freestyle and the 200-metre butterfly, where her 2:02.26 was the fastest non-super-suited time ever recorded.
"I was really not expecting that time," she told reporters after the 400 free. "Just seeing the time after two years of really pushing my hardest every day … it is really really satisfying."
Only Michael Phelps, in 2008, had broken three world records at one meet before her. Two women had done it in long-course competition — Shane Gould in 1972 and Inge de Bruijn in 2000 — placing McIntosh beside the sport's rarest company. Katie Ledecky and Sarah Sjöström each held multiple records at once, but neither broke them all in the same week.
The week lifted a career already stacked with three Olympic golds from Paris into a new register, her first meet after relocating to train under Fred Vergnoux in France.
