Katie Ledecky holds the record for the most World Championship gold medals won by any woman in swimming, a total of 21. No female swimmer in the sport's history has won more.
Fukuoka, where the 21st title fell into place
The milestone was reached at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. There Ledecky took gold in the 800m and 1500m freestyle. She added silver in the 400m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay.
The two distance golds were familiar ground. Ledecky has never lost an 800m or 1500m freestyle race at an Olympic Games or a World Championships. Fukuoka carried that streak forward.
Ten years of building a record
The run began in Barcelona in 2013, where she won four titles as a teenager. She added five in 2015, five more in 2017, one in 2019 and four in 2022. That brought her to 21 by the close of Fukuoka.
Ledecky is the first woman, and only the second swimmer after Michael Phelps, to win the same individual event four times. She ruled the 800m freestyle from 2012 to 2024. She holds the world records in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle, the events that built much of this haul.
Her wider career frames the mark. She won her first Olympic 800m gold in London at age 15, then took four golds in Rio in 2016. In Paris she defended her 1500m title and won a fourth straight 800m crown.
With 14 Olympic medals alongside the world titles, she is tied with Australia's Emma McKeon as the most decorated female swimmer of all time. The record now sits quietly behind every race she still chooses to swim.
