The bell rang over Nové Město na Moravě with the field still bunched, and the race everyone had come to watch belonged, in the end, to a rider few had come to see. Mathis Azzaro held Tom Pidcock's wheel through the final straight, waited, then slingshotted past the Olympic champion to take the men's Cross-country Short Track World Cup on 25 May 2026.
The short track had built its drama around Pidcock. Making his season debut on the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series after a spring on the road, the Briton spent much of the race at the back of the group, holding an extreme position on a fast, explosive Czech circuit. From the first metres the pace was set high, the French pair of Luca Martin and Azzaro pressing at the front while the cameras stayed fixed on the man drifting off the rear.
Decided in the final metres
Pidcock's comeback arrived in stages. He moved up sharply on the sixth lap and was soon inside the top five. On the eighth, Maximilian Brandl briefly took the lead. When the bell sounded, Charlie Aldridge tried to force a gap, with Azzaro immediately on him, before Pidcock launched the move everyone had waited for and took the front for the first time. The Briton accelerated again in the finishing straight, trying to seal it. Azzaro sat on his wheel, then opened his own sprint in the last metres and came past to win. Pidcock finished second at one second, with Dario Lillo third to complete the podium.
Azzaro described a plan executed almost to the letter. He said he had known Pidcock would come from behind and simply waited for it.
"I knew that Tom was coming from the back, I just waited, he came the last lap like a Formula 1 car, and I just jumped into the wheel."
Pidcock, for his part, admitted after the line that he had miscalculated, moving up too late, and spoke of the difficulty of returning to the mountain bike after time away.
A season without defeat in the discipline
The win was the second consecutive XCC World Cup victory of Azzaro's 2026 season, leaving the 26-year-old Frenchman unbeaten in the format this year. Riding for ORIGINE RACING DIVISION, a team without the budget or profile of the factory outfits around him, he took the measure of one of cycling's most decorated riders in a straight sprint. For a rider still building his name against the sport's established figures, beating Pidcock marks a clear step upward, one of the most significant results of his career to date.
He crossed the line and took a moment before celebrating, aware that chances like this are rare. On this Saturday in Moravia, he did not waste it.
