The birthday that turned
Marta Kostyuk struck a backhand pass down the line, and the pattern of a rivalry broke. On Court Philippe-Chatrier, she beat four-time champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1. It was Swiatek's 25th birthday. It became Kostyuk's afternoon.
The match turned on a single stretch.
Swiatek served for the first set at 5-4, but was broken during a stretch of four successive games won by the returner.
From there the contest tilted and never righted.
Kostyuk won nine of the final 10 games for her first win over the Pole to reach her second major quarterfinal.
She read the second serve, pressed the forehand, and kept advancing.
Kostyuk completely flipped the draw open, nearly doubling Swiatek's winner output — 25 to 13 — and punishing the Pole's serve, converting six of nine break points.
Conditions asked questions of both.
Kostyuk handled the milder, breezy conditions better throughout the one-hour, 40-minute affair.
The scale of the result was not lost on her.
"I'm still in shock, you know, to beat such an unbelievable player who won four times here and I lost three times to her before this," Kostyuk said. "So, never taken a set off her, it's incredible. I still cannot believe it."
Swiatek offered a plain account of her own unravelling.
"I know that I lost because I was tense, and my body couldn't really do the proper things, you know, but it's not the first time," she said.
A trajectory, not an accident
The win read as a shock only against the record. It did not read as one against the season.
Her 7-5, 6-1 victory extended her unbeaten streak on clay to 16 matches, only the second woman after Justine Henin in 2005, since WTA rankings began, to reach as many.
The streak was built on titles.
The 23-year-old previously lifted trophies in Rouen and Madrid, her first WTA 1000 triumph, during the European clay-court swing.
The context around Swiatek measured the distance covered.
While Swiatek had not passed the semifinals in any of her three lead-up events, her Roland-Garros record spoke for itself — four titles from as many finals, 43 wins from 46 matches.
Kostyuk had known the other side of that ledger for years.
Swiatek had won a 6-3, 6-4 fourth-round meeting in 2021, Kostyuk's Grand Slam second-week debut, and had never dropped a set to her in three professional encounters.
The victory carried her onward. Days later,
Kostyuk became the first Ukrainian woman to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros in the Open era.
She reached it in the dark, through war. She reached it anyway.
