Márquez Wins Misano Double to Claim 2026 Title Lead

Marc Márquez delivered a flawless weekend at Misano, winning both the sprint and the Grand Prix to seize the lead of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship for the first time this season.

A gift on the opening lap

Pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi fended off Márquez into Turn 1 and controlled the opening three-quarters of the lap.

Márquez did not have it easy. Title rival Jorge Martin closed to within 0.4 seconds by Lap 5 and pinched the lead at Turn 4 just two laps later.

Precision strike at Turn 6

The response was immediate and measured. Márquez strung together a series of personal best laps to erase the deficit. On Lap 12, he dove back under Martin at Turn 6 to retake a lead he would not surrender again.

From there, the threat came from his own bloodline. Younger brother Alex Márquez, charging from ninth on the grid, trimmed the gap to half a second with five laps remaining. The margin held at exactly 0.5 seconds with two laps to go, but Marc kept his cool to secure victory at Gresini's home round.

A 102-point swing to the summit

The win marks Márquez's 78th premier-class victory and completes a remarkable turnaround. Just seven rounds earlier, he trailed by 102 points — the largest deficit ever overturned in a MotoGP title chase. Now he sits level with Martin on 274 points, with Bezzecchi 33 points adrift in third.

Pedro Acosta joined the Márquez brothers on the podium, while Francesco Bagnaia crashed out in front of his home crowd. The double victory, secured from second on the grid after Bezzecchi's record pole lap, puts the champion back atop the standings for the first time since his 2025 title triumph.
