Assen belongs to Ogura
The line came at 2.004 seconds. Ai Ogura crossed it alone, upright on the Trackhouse Aprilia, the first Japanese rider to win in the premier class since Makoto Tamada in 2004. On 28 June 2026 he took the Dutch TT at Assen for his first MotoGP victory, and he did it at the front of an Aprilia one-two-three.
The race did not hand it to him. Ogura started second and led into the first corner. At the start of the 26-lap grand prix, Ogura got the holeshot from second on the grid, though polesitter Martin came through at Turn 2. The order then began to churn. Taking the lead on the opening lap, Ogura would find himself shuffled back to fifth at one stage, and survived a ride height device issue to take the chequered flag 2.004s clear of the field.
The order narrowed early. Jorge Martin completed an all-Aprilia top three, after team-mate Marco Bezzecchi crashed out heavily on the second lap. Bezzecchi was running fourth when he suffered a fast crash at Turn 15. He was taken to hospital for checks and escaped injury. Behind, the field thinned further: Pecco Bagnaia dropped out with brake issues on lap 15, while KTM's Pedro Acosta was forced to retire due to a physical problem.
Ogura's own moment of danger came late. On lap 16, Ogura suffered an issue with his ride height device and dropped off the back of Martin and Fernandez. He managed to unlock the device and up his pace again, while Fernandez took the lead at the end of lap 17. Then he answered. Ogura overtook Martin for second at Turn 1 on lap 18, before taking the lead from Fernandez at Turn 9 two tours later. He streaked clear of his Aprilia stablemates to claim his first MotoGP win.
A step in the trajectory
The win completed a full weekend for the American-run team. It completes back-to-back 1-2s for the Trackhouse team, after Raul Fernandez won the sprint on Saturday at Assen. For Ogura, the result reshaped the season. He is now 25 points down on Martin, with Ogura well in title contention after his victory.
Assen was familiar ground, and that mattered. "For me, winning in Assen made it even more special because it's one of my favourite tracks. I won the race in Moto2 as well," he told reporters after the race. He described the closing laps plainly, a rider watching a gap grow rather than chasing one. "I was not rushing; I was just doing my ride and the gap was getting bigger between me and them," he said.
Twenty-two years of waiting ended on a quiet afternoon in the Netherlands. Ai Ogura simply rode away.
