Léon Marchand closed his home Olympic Games as the most decorated athlete of Paris 2024, finishing with five medals. Four of them were gold, and the last arrived on 4 August when his breaststroke leg helped France to bronze in the men's 4x100m medley relay.
A bronze forged in a frantic relay
France lined up Yohann Ndoye Brouard on backstroke, Marchand on breaststroke, Maxime Grousset on butterfly and Florent Manaudou on the crawl anchor. China's Xu Jiayu opened fastest, but Marchand erased the gap against Britain's Adam Peaty before China's Qin Haiyang surged back ahead of both.
Grousset wrestled France level with China during the butterfly, while Caeleb Dressel dragged the United States into contention. Then China's Pan Zhanle delivered a historic anchor leg, splitting 45.92 seconds — the fastest 100-metre relay split ever recorded — to reclaim gold in 3:27.46. The United States took silver in 3:28.01, and France secured bronze in 3:28.38.
Four individual golds, four Olympic records
The relay bronze completed a week that had already placed Marchand alongside Mark Spitz, Michael Phelps and Kristin Otto as the only swimmers to win four individual golds at a single Games. He began with the 400m individual medley in 4:02.95, winning by nearly five seconds. Two nights later he executed a same-session double, taking the 200m butterfly in 1:51.21 and then the 200m breaststroke in 2:05.85.
He finished his individual programme by dominating the 200m individual medley in 1:54.06. Every swim set an Olympic record. No athlete at Paris 2024 amassed more gold medals or more total medals.
"My week was incredible. I came to grab a medal, I leave Paris with five," he told reporters after the relay final, once the last roar of his home crowd had settled.
A trajectory through record waters
The Paris sweep extended a steep career arc. At the 2023 Worlds in Fukuoka he broke Michael Phelps' nearly 15-year-old 400m individual medley world record. In Singapore two summers later he broke Ryan Lochte's 200m individual medley mark at 1:52.69, and a year after that he won his first European title with the year's fastest 200m butterfly.
Marchand turned the La Défense Arena pool into a national stage and walked away owning the Games. The bronze carried no disappointment — it simply completed the set.
