Małgorzata Karbownik is the junior world champion in modern pentathlon. The Pole won the women's final at the UIPM 2026 Junior World Championships in Kaunas with 1,473 points, reported as a junior world record. She already races at senior level, so the title added a new line to a growing career.

A record score decided at the shooting range

The five sports — fencing, swimming, riding, then the laser-run of running and shooting — were settled in a single day. She cemented her potential with a strong and decisive performance to win gold with a world record 1,473 points, finishing 8sec ahead of silver medallist Katharina Jurt of Switzerland. The margin held to the line.

Karbownik built her lead on the closing laser-run, where accurate shooting kept her clear of the chase. She knew the plan and trusted it. The finish came about eight seconds before her nearest rival.

Poland's 21-year-old ahead of a fierce field

Karbownik announced herself as a starlet of the sport with a 4th-place finish at the UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Final. At 21, she was among the most experienced names in a junior draw stacked with rising talent. The world-record total set a fresh mark for the age group.

The race behind her stayed tight to the end. Ganah Elgindy of Egypt held off the threat of Blanka Bauer of Hungary by 1sec for bronze, while Lucie Hlavackova of Czechia and Jana Attia rounded out the top six.

Karbownik pointed to her final discipline as the key. "I knew I would have to shoot very fast if I want to achieve my dream and take a medal in this competition," she told reporters afterwards. Her plan held under pressure.

For a pentathlete already at home among seniors, the junior crown is a marker rather than a finish. It places Karbownik among the names to watch as the sport looks ahead.
