Lukes Wins Men's Individual World Pentathlon Title

The men's individual world title belongs to the Czech Republic. Matej Lukeš won gold at the 2026 UIPM Pentathlon World Championships in Guiyang, China, on 30 August.

A late charge in the Laser Run

The final came down to the closing discipline. Lukeš entered the Laser Run needing to make up ground, and he produced a decisive late surge to overtake his rivals.

He crossed the line with a winning score of 1586 points. Gromadskii claimed silver on 1581 points, the equivalent of a 5-second gap in the combined run-shoot event.

Seo Changwan, who had already won mixed relay gold earlier in the week, took bronze with 1576 points. The South Korean finished 10 seconds adrift of the new champion.

A first global crown for the Czech

The victory marks the first senior individual world title of Lukeš's career. He arrived in Guiyang as the world number one and turned that ranking into gold in a field that included the previous day's relay medallists.

The men's competition ran across five days, from qualification through fencing seeding, semi-finals, to the medal-deciding final on Sunday. Russia later took the men's team title ahead of Egypt and France.

For Lukeš, the Guiyang podium was the moment a leading ranking became a world championship.
