Katie Ledecky reached 14 career Olympic medals in Paris, tying Larisa Latynina for the most ever won by a woman. The mark came with gold in the 800m freestyle, her signature event. It closed a fourth Olympic Games spread over twelve years.
Titmus closes in, but the streak holds
The final was decided at Paris La Défense Arena on 3 August 2024. Ariarne Titmus, already a double gold medallist in Paris, pulled within a couple of strokes of Ledecky in the middle of the race.
Each time the Australian closed, the American powered back clear. Ledecky touched in 8:11.04, more than a second ahead of Titmus at 8:12.29. American Paige Madden took bronze.
Four in a row, a record shared with Latynina
It was Ledecky's fourth straight Olympic title at 800m, a run that began in London in 2012. That made her the first female Olympian to win four golds in the same individual event. The victory was also her ninth Olympic gold, tying Latynina's record on that count too.
The medal completed a busy week. A day earlier she had won silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay, passing Jenny Thompson, Natalie Coughlin and Dara Torres to stand alone with 13 before the 800m lifted her to 14.
"We were all hurting after that one," Ledecky told reporters afterwards. "I knew it was going to be tough and it definitely played out that way." Titmus, the runner-up, added that she was happy to be the one chasing a streak she called remarkable.
From a 15-year-old winning her first 800m in London to a shared Olympic record in Paris, the event has framed Ledecky's whole career.
