On Saturday night in Paris, Katie Ledecky touched first in the 800m freestyle and claimed her ninth Olympic gold. The win tied Larisa Latynina's mark for the most Olympic golds by a woman in any sport. No woman in any sport had ever stood above that number.
A duel with Titmus, decided at the wall
The final was a thriller from start to finish. Ariarne Titmus of Australia matched Ledecky stroke for stroke over almost the entire distance. The American answered with a relentless, grinding pace.
Titmus never got her nose in front. Ledecky reached the wall in 8:11.04 to take gold, with Titmus settling for silver and her compatriot Paige Madden the bronze. The lead never changed hands.
Fourteen medals, nine golds, level with Latynina
The victory came exactly 12 years to the day after her first 800m title, won as a 15-year-old in London. It was her fourth straight win in the event, making her the first woman to take four golds in a single Olympic event, and only the second swimmer after Michael Phelps to win one event across four different Games. Ledecky had opened these Games by defending her 1500m freestyle crown.
The race was the last on her Paris card. It lifted her Olympic total to 14 medals, the most ever by a female swimmer, and nine of them are gold. Her 21 world championship titles are also the most of any woman in the pool.
"I knew it was going to be a tough race," Ledecky told reporters afterwards. "I have good early speed, and I can come home hard, and I can trust my endurance."
She now stands four medals short of Latynina's overall standard of 18. The 2028 Los Angeles Games, held on home soil, offer her the chance to chase that record further.
